Celebrate Table Tipping

Updated: Nov 25

Table Tipping is one of the many activities used by Spiritualists to communicate with incarnate spirits.  Since the early days of Spiritualism tables were used as a form of physical communication with spirits.  Tables would vibrate, spin, raise up, tilt, tap out messages and levitate.  One of the things that draws people to table tipping is the idea that tables bring people together.

During a tipping, all participants would place their hands on the table while the medium asked spirit to move the table for signs and messages.  “Is there someone here... tap once for Yes and twice for No?”

Some scientists and skeptics consider table-turning to be the result of the ideomotor effect  or of conscious trickery. The ideomotor effect is a psychological phenomenon wherein a subject makes motions unconsciously. If asked to consider what method of mediumship is used, whether mental (a medium receiving information from a spirit and relaying it to others) or physical (a spirit uses a tangible, concrete object to facilitate the communication) Most well-versed mediums used a combination of both mental and physical.

Although dated, depending on the technique used and the popularity over time, table tipping, enjoys a comeback every now and then and offers mediums another modality to reach sitters/clients and their loved ones in spirit.

Who's to say what is genuine? Table tipping is yet another tool we can use to find answers and bring together friends, family and the curious. I think we must be more open to the subtle side of tipping as well as the showmanship side.  People believe many things but gathering around a table brings people together in a welcomed and even vulnerable state. All hands on the table is a way to unite a group for the good of all.  A way to stir the pot with many hands. Think about the shared energy around the table.  There’s a coming together of personalities that can only be created with each of these unique individuals.  Just thinking in this way raises the subtle energy for heighten awareness. And this is good.

The table can be viewed as a tool of communication.  Most of us would say a table is a place to eat and drink and to bring family and friends together.  Think about business and the boardroom. Schools. Places to communicate all kinds of messages. Think about a wedding, food love celebration.  We are celebrating Spirit when we enter into a table tipping.  We are acknowledging, celebrating, communicating and bonding with the other members at the table.

This brings me to a place of transformation and meaning. With table tipping we are summoning or calling upon a Spirit to use a table to respond or are we just wanting to hear from our loved ones? Do we want a show?... Either way we want to know that there is more to life than what we see and hear.  The meaning behind our table tipping is very clear. Spirit is here for all of us and communicates to each of us in a language we can understand.  We only need to be aware of the subtleties.

-Trust in the table?? Trust in Spirit.  We trust in Spirit to make communication by using   the table.

-The focus should be on Spirit more than the table.

-Think of your loved ones and be open to other spirit visitors too.

-Always be open to the different personalities, comments and opinions.

-Don’t think “this table is never going to move.” Think, “this table can move.”

-Confidence.

-Trust in Spirit.

-Trust in your loved ones in spirit.

-Open your mind to possibilities.

Remember when tipping tables, YOU may actually “tip” the outlook of an unsuspecting participant.  Opening a whole new way to think about something as ordinary as a table.
