I listened to the music of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass the other day. My dad was a fan. He had a few of Herb’s albums, vinyl. Round record in a square jacket.
I was playing some music on my phone and Herb Alpert popped up, the song Rise. As I played the various songs from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, I was amazed that I remembered so many songs. I see my old house, the living room, the console with the stereo. I see that console with the lid up. I see my brothers holding the album cover A Taste of Honey (Whipped Cream)….
As I played Herbs songs one after another I was there with my brothers and sister in our old living room. We sat on the floor close to the stereo, each one of us wanting to be one to put the record on the turntable.
As I listened to the song playing, I asked why this song? Why now? I listened and nostalgia-ed. A knowing passed through my mind, Dad. I looked at the song selection and there it was the bull, The Lonely Bull. I didn’t remember that song. A reminder from Dad of course. I was so absorbed in the music and memories of my brothers and sister I forgot this is about my father, Ferdinand.
Everyone called him Ferdinand the Bull. The song, the Lonely Bull, is his way of telling me he’s listening. I see my father there in the living room placing an album into his stereo console.
